UAW/EPA Bailout
The auto industry bailout needs a new name--an accurate name. It needs to be called the UAW/EPA bailout. The major reasons the auto industry is in the situation its in, is due to being held hostage by the UAW and the EPA.
The number of people supported by the auto industry who NO LONGER WORK FOR THE AUTO INDUSTRY now exceeds the number that are actually currently employed by the auto industry. Think about that. Could you run a business if you had to pay twice as many employees as actually work there? Of course not. So is it any wonder the auto industry is having problems?
Combine that with a government mandated mileage standard and it is not surprising the car companies are begging for money. The market for autos wants larger vehicles which are safer, capable of carrying more than 4 adults and have amenities comparable with the cost of the vehicle. The EPA says, however, that car companies must produce smaller vehicles which are much less safe, carry only 4 adults (or less) and lack amenities which the buyer is paying for, but not getting. Its tough to put 6 cup holders in a vehicle which doesn't even have room for your feet or luggage.
It is time for a name change, but sadly it won't happen. The mass media is in the back pocket of the UAW and the EPA. One can only hope.
